Fact Check: John Mahama Launched Free SHS In 2014.

As the December 7th election looms, there is a social media duel over which government launched the Free SHS which seems to be the biggest political achievement in Ghana so far.

 

While John Mahama of the NDC is claiming that he started the policy, President Akufo-Addo of the NPP has said he was the one who truly implemented FREE SHS in the true sense of the word.

Well, a fack-check  has reveals a publication by www.modernghana.com in 2014 where the then-candidate Akufo-Addo congratulated President Mahama for implementing Free SHS.

According to the publication, Akufo-Addo said if the NDC had thought it wise to go ahead to implement his much-touted FREE SHS policy, it was a step in the right direction.

As to whether what Mahama started which had Akufo-Addo congratulate him was actually Free SHS or not can only be ascertained by the politicians and discerned by Ghanaians.

The 2012 Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party, Nana Akufo-Addo says the President’s decision to implement the free Senior High School (SHS) education in 2015 is good news for Ghanaians and should be welcomed by all.

In an interview with an Accra based Oman FM, Nana Addo said if the President and his National Democratic Congress (NDC) government now considers the free SHS education policy possible then it is good for Ghanaians.

‘I see it as good news to Ghanaians; everything we[politicians] do is to improve the lives of and benefit Ghanaians. Its good news to all of us Ghanaians,’ he reiterated.

According to the NPP 2012 flagbearer, if now the President and the NDC see the free SHS education as possible and a good policy, it is welcomed.

He also disputed comments that the NPP will not have a campaign message for the 2016 general election. ‘we will have a campaign message; they are a lot of campaign messages, the issues will be about what the NDC was able to do in power.’

Nana Addo who arrived in Ghana on Wednesday night after a six-month vacation in the United Kingdom (UK) further congratulated the NPP executives for their good  leaders organization ahead of the 2016 elections.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2012 general elections trumpeted the Free SHS education policy as its main campaign message amidst opposition and rejection of the policy by the NDC.

‘Free SHS education’ was a campaign message of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) during the 2012 Presidential and Parliamentary elections.

The NPP promised to implement a free education policy for every Senior High School (SHS) student.

However, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) insisted that instead of free SHS education, emphasis must be placed on ‘quality education’ and improving basic education.

But President John Mahama in his state of the nation address to Parliament on 25th February announced that his government, will from 2015, start the implementation of the free SHS policy.

‘We must make education a priority again. The students of this nation deserve to have the confidence that comes from knowing that the education they are receiving will adequately prepare them to navigate this competitive global workplace,’ President Mahama said.
