About UBC’s International Scholars Program

The UBC has two scholarships that every international student is considered for: the International Major Entrance Scholarship and the Outstanding International Student Awards scholarship. These two automatic merit-based scholarships provide a total value of $25,000 per year for every international student.

Karen McKellin International Leader of Tomorrow Award

Under the UBC’s International Scholars Program, the Karen McKellin International Leader of Tomorrow award recognizes international undergraduate students with superior academic achievement, exceptional leadership skills, good involvement in student affairs, community service, and other recognized achievements in other key areas. 

Selected students for this scholarship award receive financial assistance for tuition, fees, and living cost.

Worth/Value/Benefit: The value of your Karen McKellin International Leader of Tomorrow Award is proportional to your financial need. Financial need is determined by totaling tuition, fees, and living costs, and subtracting the financial contribution you and your family can make each year. A standard needs assessment is based on the financial information provided by you and your family.

Your award may be renewed for up to three additional years of undergraduate study or to degree completion – whichever comes first – provided you achieve satisfactory academic standing in your faculty, continue to demonstrate financial need, and maintain your Canadian study permit (student visa).

Eligibility Criteria For The University Of British Columbia Leaders Of Tomorrow Award.

1. Be an international student who will be studying on a Canadian study permit.

2. Be entering the UBC from a well-recognized secondary school, and transferring from your first year at a post-secondary college or university. 

3. Applicant must have graduated from high school no earlier than the month of June, one year prior to the academic year you are applying to. For example, applicants for the 2023 academic year must have graduated from high school no earlier than 2021. 

4. You must be applying for your first undergraduate degree.

5. You must demonstrate superior academic achievement. [ All As or equivalents ]

6. Applicants must also demonstrate a level of financial need that would have otherwise prevented them from attaining a UBC degree. 

7. You must also meet the UBC’s admission requirements, including general and degree-specific requirements and also the English Language admission standard.

How To Apply For The University Of British Columbia Leaders Of Tomorrow Award.

To apply for the Leaders Of Tomorrow scholarship award at the University of British Columbia, you must be nominated by your school or non-profit organization and submit a reference from an academic referee. This is to confirm that your institution or non-profit organization has nominated you, inform your nominator and academic referee that you’d like to apply for the International Scholars Program at UBC. 

Submit your award application and complete the online application for admission to UBC by 15 November. You must meet the UBC English Language Admission Requirement by 31 January. Visit the application portal [ application for the 2023/2024 academic year is yet open]

Application Deadlines

November 15: You must have submitted your online application for admission to UBC, and submitted your International Scholars Program application. Although you can specify two-degree choices in your application, only your first-choice degree will be considered for an International Scholars Program award.

January 31: Meet UBC’s English Language Admission Standard for direct entry, or the English language requirement for UBC Vantage College if you have applied to a Vantage One program and are hoping to be considered for the Vantage One Excellent Award.

January 31: Submit any documents required for your admission to UBC. Please submit by this deadline, not the date indicated in your “next steps” email.

Mid-April: You will be informed if you have received an award.
