For days now the Vice President of Ghana Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has been trending after screenshots of searches conducted revealed that he is been ranked as the biggest liar in Ghana according to Google.
Many people thought it was just a deliberate attempt by google to defame the image of the Vice President. Upon research, it has come to light that it really wasn’t attempted by Google to ridicule Bawumia as a liar. And the CEO of the biggest search engine has taken his time to lay out some facts on how those query results come about during a committee meeting in 2018.
In 2018, The CEO of Google Sundar Pichai appeared before a Judiciary Committee hearing in Washington DC where he was asked questions as to why Donald Trump’s images appear anytime the word “IDIOT” was googled.
Explaining how Google works, he said “Anytime you type in a keyword, as Google we have gone out and crawled and stored copies of billions of Websites pages in our index. And we take the keyword and match it against their pages and rank them based on over 200 signals – things like relevance, freshness, popularity, and how other people are using it.
And based on that, at any given time, we try to rank and find the best search results for that query. And then evaluate it to the objective guidelines. And that is how we make sure the process is working. This is working at scale and we don’t manually intervene on any particular search result” He said.
Who Ranked Bawumia The Biggest Liar In Ghana?
Drawing from the above explanation, one can easily concur that Google doesn’t identify Bawumia as the biggest liar in Ghana, however, Bawumia’s image might have appeared because many Ghanaians have used the word or term with his name and images, an algorithm that was suggested to Google by its users from Ghana and around the world.
In other words, Ghanaians are those who ranked Bawumia as the biggest liar in Ghana thereby telling the search engine about it.
