From 2011 to 2019 has been a year span that had some big headlines that shook the world for bad and good reasons across the globe. Here is a recount of those stories as we hit the end.
QADDAFI’S DEATH IN 2011.
On the 20th of October 2011 after ruling Libya for 4 decades and 2 years, revolutionaries captures the Libyan Leader Muamar Al- Qaddafi and shot him dead.
The world saw the news coming as the US made him a target over some time, but still the news shook the world when his death news was announced. A sad day for Africa but good news for some other people.
POPE BENEDICT XVI RESIGNATION, 2013.
In 600 years, this Pope became the first acting leader of the catholic church to resign during active service. But attention was quickly taken from him to his successor Pope Francis.
The big question was why would the Pope resign on duty? During his official press statement, he revealed that his physical and mental strength can not carry him on duty any longer as it requires travelling and given speeches all over the world as a Pope.
NELSON MANDELA DIED, 2013
The world came to a stand still when when former President of South Africa Jacob Zuma announced the death of Nelson Mandela.
There were movies, songs and documentaries released all over the world to celebrate the his fight for South Africa.
Jacob Zuma called him the father of South Africa.
#BRINGBACKOURGIRLS CAMPAIGN 2014.
In April 2104, the Islamic militant group Boko Haram captured about 200 Chibok girls in Nigeria. The news got the attention of top world leaders and celebrities who carry placards around pleading the Nigerian government to bring back the girls from the terrorists camp.
NIGERIA ELECTIONS 2015.
What make this a world headline? Former Military ruler came from resignation to win the election with no stress, as the opposition candidate to win election in Nigeria, he defeated his rival Gen. Goodluck Jonathan with a gap more than 2.5 million votes.
Finally the People’s Democratic Party PDP lose the election for the first time in 16 years.
DONALD TRUMP BECAME US PRESIDENT 2016
This was a different story from other presidential elections ever in the US history because no expected the results as it went against the favorite contestant Hillary Clinton.
During the counting of the votes, Hillary was in a comfortable lead until the final declaration saw her loose to the real estate developer and business mogul Donald Trump.
Though some people believe there was a hack in the system to see Trump win, it was a story of no evidence.
LEICESTER WIN PREMIER LEAGUE 2016.
For football lovers, the miracle of the decade would be how Leicester city became the winners in England after suffering relegation the previous season in May 2016.
Notable moments of humiliating top clubs like Chelsea, Man City and other big clubs are still fresh in some minds.
MEGHAN MARKLE WEDDING, 2018.
It was a record breaking wedding as the first black woman to become the Duchess of Sussex in England.
On the 19th May 2018, over millions of people sat down to watch the royal wedding and over 3 million people tweet about it only on twitter whiles it was floating everywhere on other social media platforms.
One of the events of the decade that got into almost every corner of the world.
BLACK PANTHER MOVIE.
What got the Black Panther movie ahead of other big story movies released in this decade? The first Marvel superhero movie where the main actor was a black man and even the director as well.
It became the first superhero movie to get a nomination for Best Picture Oscar in December and also the first superhero movie to get a nomination for Golden Globe.
Black Panther became the highest grossing movie from any African-American director.
GHANA YEAR OF RETURN.
The ‘YEAR OF RETURN ‘ is now the major marketing move that has ever happen in Ghana. It was targeted at Black-American and everybody in the diaspora to mark 400 years of the first black slave to arrive in Jamestown in Virginia.
