The Electoral Commissioner of Ghana, Jean Mensa has just declared the incumbent New Patriotic government under the stewardship of Nana Akufo Addo the winner of the just-ended 2020 Presidential and Parliamentary elections.
Ghana consolidated its name as a model of peace and stability in Africa after the country went to the polls on December 7 which was conducted in a customary peaceful atmosphere that has widely been applauded by the international community.
The election was a two-horse race between the largest opposition party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) led by former president John Damani Mahama and Nana Akufo Addo.
Against all odds, John Dramani Mahama performed creditably well and pulled in a lot of numbers but ultimately fell short to beat Akufo Addo who rode his luck to some extent owing to his Free SHS policy which became his main campaign message that caught on well with the average Ghanaian.
In announcing the results, the EC’s chairperson, Madam Jean Adukwei Mensa said the NPP obtained 6,730,413 which represents 51.49% as against Mahama’s 6,214,889 being 47.366%.
She also noted that the results didn’t include the Techiman South constituency as its being contested but even if the total votes in that constituency is added to that of John Mahama, it wouldn’t change the results.
She mentioned that there’s a voter population of 128,018 in that constituency.
The NDC’s leader had earlier vowed to resist any attempt to subvert the electoral process claiming they have won but it’s obvious the electoral process has been largely transparent.
